How to get car grease out of cotton t-shirt?
Mimi asked:
Needing to get car grease off of brand new red cotton T-shirt.
I haven’t washed it yet and it’s going on two days, being so worried about messing it up more!!
Thanks

It was a T-shirt, now it’s a rag. Use it as such or throw it away.
try oxy clean
i have the best tar removal product but you will have to e-mail me at and i will put you onto it. thank you.
What my boyfriend uses is called GOOP. It feels weird at first putting it on but it takes out grease, blood, and other unwanted stains. Also, we’re just started using ‘ALL SMALL & MIGHTY” it works great on stains also. I hope it works out. I know what it’s like to mess up a great shirt.
try dish washing soap and rub with a toothbrush.
Then put more on and let set for a while, there is also some stuff called “goop” could work.
Just…do not put in the dryer until you are sure you have all you can get out, otherwise it is all over.
The longer you wait, the worst it will get.
Dirty grease is harder to get off then clean grease.
Use a degreaser like Simple Green, put it on the spot and rub on it, may be with a old tooth brush.
Rinse it with warm water.
Make a paste with Tide and few drops of water, rub it on the spot, let it sit for a while.
wash it in warm water.
Let it sit in a tub of warm Tide/water for a long time will help too.
If you still got a little bit of stain after, try color bleach,
If the shirt means alot to you, may be you should take a to a professional, it will cost you a few bucks, but they got stronger chemicals then you.
Oh, yeah, tobin is right, dont put it in the dryer until you done cleaning, or it will set the stain at high temp, and you will never get it out.
Keep the shirt wet, and keep trying, dont wait, the more the grease drys and sets in, the harder to get it off.
Agree like above Goop, or other hand claeaner. great for kids clothes also!
before drying the shirt you can also try mixing equal parts ammonia, dish soap and water and spraying the spot from the inside of the stain. gently scrub with old toothbrush, rinse under cold water check to see if it’s coming out and repeat as needed. This does work as I do it to my husbands work clothes all the time.
Use some carpet shampoo, and rub it gently with a soft brush, then wash it again.
I heard that you can use shampoo to get grease out of clothes. Kinda like greasey hair….greasey clothes. Try it…..let me know what you come up with.
Apply full strength Purple Power cleaner/degreaser (log onto their web site at to find a retailer near you). I purchase mine in a gallon container from my local Auto Zone auto parts store and use it to clean everything. Apply the purple power, let it sit for an hour or so, and then wash the shirt by itself with a small amount of regular laundry detergent.
